My Cherry & Walnut Stripe Stave Snare

This snare was built by Arden Keith Hatfield of Hatfield Drums in Asheboro, NC — a 7×14, half-inch thick stave shell in Cherry with Walnut accent stripes.

Cherry is a wood that rewards patience. It has a natural warmth and a slightly bright, sweet voice that stave construction showcases beautifully — the continuous grain flow of a well-built stave shell lets the wood speak in a way that ply construction simply doesn’t allow. The Walnut stripes aren’t just visual; they add a touch of density and darkness to the tone that keeps the Cherry from getting too bright under a hard stick. The result is a shell with a deep, glassy natural finish that lets every grain detail read clearly — wide Cherry panels alternating with narrower Walnut stripes in a pattern that gives the drum a bold, almost architectural presence.

The hardware is ten-lug black chrome — sleek and purposeful, and a perfect counterpoint to the warmth of the Cherry shell. A Remo Coated Emperor batter head completes the setup, adding body and control while letting the natural character of the wood come forward.

This is a drum that turns heads before you ever hit it — and then delivers when you do.
